JOB APPLICATIONS WITH IOs, 16-17 December 2019, 9 a.m. - 5 p.m.
The seminar will offer practical tools and tips to support DA students in the job search process at international organisations. This includes understanding how to match individual CV’s with available job vacancies also by defining transferrable skills; developing a job search strategy i.e. where and how to look for vacant positions, and writing a successful application (cover letter and application form).
One of the most valuable and effective tools in job search is the ability to delivery a crisp and accurate pitch. A career pitch is a focused and purposeful narrative which is mostly verbal and can be used in searching for a job or inserted in a written application. Almost like a business card of your skills, experiences and career aspirations, every pitch is unique in style and content. It aims to provide a short information about yourself and to engage interest the listener or the reader. Ideally it is a door opener.
Further, the workshop will specifically prepare students for the selection process. This includes preparation of a possible preview interview, for example, on Sonru (an online tool used at UN organisations) and for the face-to-face structured, competency based interviews. Using a real vacancy notice we will anticipate behavioural questions and practice how to answer them. It will also include a session on how to deal with rejection.
Importantly, there will be plenty of time to answer specific questions the students may have.

PREPARING FOR JOB INTERVIEWS, 18-19 December 2019, 9 a.m. - 5 p.m.
In this workshop you will learn how to prepare a professional CV (résumé) according to the expectations of different roles at companies and sectors by comparing good and poor examples of CVs and cover letter. Learn dynamic action verbs and positive personality adjectives that can be used in written and spoken language to present the ‘best’ you. Find out the clichés to avoid and that interviewers hate to hear! Train strategies for dealing with nerves and being more assertive by displaying confidence, energy and friendliness via non-verbal communication.
On the second day we review your own CVs and cover letters and then we move on to the interview itself. What to prepare? What are the most common questions you can expect to be asked? What the interviewer’s ‘hidden agenda’? What do they really want to find out about you? What is the best way to answer the question "What are your weaknesses?" or "Why are you the right person for the job?". Learn how to respond to difficult, tricky or unethical questions and even turn them into your advantage. The afternoon is dedicated to role-playing interview situations with peer and trainer feedback.
